Woodlawn Senior Wins Rotary Speech CompetitionA Woodlawn High School Senior is the winner in the novice division of the annual Blanche Carlton Sloan Speed Competition sponsored by Rotary International District 6510 at John A. Logan College at Carterville.
Matt Renaud spoke on 'The Key to Peace Is Through Serving Others'. The novice division is for students with little or no previous speaking experience. Renaud was sponsored by the Mt. Vernon West Rotary Club.
Harrisburg High School Senior Meredith Wolf won the first place award for students with previous speech competition experience.
In the contests, high-school-age students from all over the 28 county Rotary District spoke about the local, national and global impact of the Rotary's 'Four-Way Test' and of the current Rotary theme 'Peace Through Service'. The annual contest is named in honor of the district's first woman governor, Blanche Carlton Sloan of Carbondale.
