Winter Storm Watch Issued For Region on Thursday

By Bruce Kropp, WJBD news

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for South Central Illinois from Thursday morning through Thursday evening.

The precipitation is expected to expand into the area Thursday morning initially as snow or sleet and then continue through the day on Thursday with freezing rain getting into the mix, especially for areas south of Interstate 70. The wintry mix will then taper off Thursday evening as freezing drizzle.

The weather service reports snow and sleet accumulation potential of up to six inches, along with the potential of up to two-ten tenths of an inch of ice. The heaviest snow accumulations are expected across Northeast Missouri and West Central Illinois, with the largest ice accumulations along and south of Interstate 70. Strong east winds are also forecast, at ten to 20 miles per hour with gusts up to 30 miles per hour.

The snow, sleet and ice accumulations are expected to have significant impacts on travel. Ice may cause damage to trees and power lines. A winter storm watch is advanced notice that severe winter weather is possible, but does not mean it is a certainty. Those in the watch area should begin preparing in case the storm does materialize.

If you have travel planned, you may want to adjust your travel time to avoid the storm. Make sure vehicle is winterized and your home is stocked with emergency supplies such as food, medicine and extra heating fuel.

The impact of any storm should not be long lasting. After a high temperature of 34 on Thursday and a low of 24 Thursday night, temperatures on Friday are expected to rebound into the mid-40's.

Meanwhile, a cold front that ushered in the colder temperatures overnight brought .45 inches of rain to the Salem Water Treatment Plant and .51 inches to the Centralia Water Treatment Plant.
