By Bruce Kropp, WJBD News

A 35-year-old Wayne City man was killed when his van was struck by an eastbound Norfolk Southern train in Bluford early Saturday morning.

Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks identifies the victim as Shawn Betts of East Section Line Road.  The accident occurred at the Falcon Street Crossing on the west side of Bluford.  Marks says Betts' Honda Element was drug down the tracks less than a half mile before the train was able to stop.

Betts was pronounced dead on the scene at five Saturday morning.  Marks says Betts died from multiple trauma.  He reports there will be no autopsy, but toxicology samples were taken.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and Norfolk Southern Railroad are continuing their investigation.
