Vacant Mt. Vernon Home Destroyed By Fire

By Bruce Kropp, WJBD News

Mt. Vernon City Firemen say a vacant home was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning.  Firemen were called to the residence at 309 Bell Street after flames were seen shooting from the roof.  The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The house is owned by Clarence Mays of Mt. Vernon.

While there were no utilities to the house, Ameren crews had to be called to the scene as a result of the fire burning some power lines.   The fire call came in just before five Tuesday morning, with firemen remaining on the scene for about an hour.
