University of Illinois Hangouts Being Torn Down for Apartments
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Buildings that once held a pair of landmark businesses near the University of Illinois campus are coming down to make way for a five-story apartment building. The Champaign News-Gazette reports demolition started this week on the buildings that housed the White Horse Inn and Garcia's Pizza-in-a-Pan in Campustown. Garcia's closed that location in 2008 and the White Horse Inn closed last summer.
Both were longtime gathering spots for students. Garcia's opened at the location on Green Street in 1976 and the White Horse Inn opened in 1973. Champaign city records indicate the 52-unit apartment building will occupy both of the adjacent sites.
