University of Illinois, Chief Group Reach Trademark Settlement

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - The University of Illinois and a group dedicated to the former Chief Illiniwek mascot have reached a settlement over the use of the symbol's name and image.

Under this week's deal the Honor the Chief Society can host activities related to the mascot but for the most part won't be able to use the name "Chief Illiniwek" or the official logo.   The university stopped using the mascot in 2007 under NCAA pressure. But the school owns trademarks for the name and image.  The university threatened legal action in 2010 to stop Honor the Chief events in which a student dressed as the chief.

Society co-founder Roger Huddleston told The News-Gazette he's relieved by the settlement.

University spokeswoman Robin Kaler says the settlement clarifies what the group can do.
