Two Accidents on I-57 Send Four To the HospitalA total of four people were taken to Salem Township Hospital following two roll over accidents on Interstate 57.
The first wreck occurred on Sunday during the very heavy rain and limited visibility. State Police say 48-year-old Violet Treat of Mattoon was traveling northbound in the passing lane eight miles north of the Salem exit when a semi in the driving lane began drifting into the passing lane. Treat took evasive action to avoid being struck by the truck, lost control of her car and went into the center median. Her car then overturned multiple times coming to rest facing west on the southbound shoulder. Both Violet Treat and her two-year-old daughter, Talynn Treat of Mattoon, were taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment. The Kinmundy-Alma Fire and Ambulance were called to assist the victims.
Two Houston, Texas residents were hurt in the second roll over accident that occurred early Monday morning on Interstate 57 two miles south of the U.S. 50 exit at Salem. Initial information indicates the driver, Shantal Montiel, lost control, ran off the road with her car ending up on its top on the shoulder of the highway. Montiel along with a 22-month-old passenger, Jason Mendez, were taken to Salem Township Hospital for treatment. Marion County Sheriff's Deputies have not yet completed reports on the wreck.
