Surgery Delayed On SCHS Grad Injured In Costa Rica AccidentThe surgery scheduled in Costa Rica for a 2009 Salem Community High School student seriously hurt in a Monday accident has been rescheduled for Saturday.
Salem High Principal John Boles said Hannah Mercer was asleep in the back of a vehicle when it crashed head on into a bus. She sustained three bad breaks to one of her legs and a broken collarbone. Boles says it is the goal to return Mercer to the states once the surgery is complete and her condition is stabilized.
Boles reports an account has now been set up at Marion County Savings Bank for those who would like to assist the Mercer family with medical expenses. He says there was a wonderful turnout Thursday when he opened the school office for two hours to take donations.
Boles says because the accident occurred in a foreign country, all medical services have to be paid upfront. Mercer is the daughter of Salem High School District Secretary Milrea Flanigan, who has flown to Costa Rica to be with her daughter.
