Snow and Ice Covered Bridge Leads to Clinton County CrashA 75-year-old Belleville man was seriously injured Friday afternoon when the pickup truck he was driving lost control on a snow and ice covered bridge on Interstate 64 in Clinton County.
State Police say Louis Billhartz was eastbound on I-64 in the right lane when he crossed over the Silver Creek bridge overpass, lost traction, and began to slide and spin. His pickup went off the southside of the road, struck a guardrail, overturned and rolled down the shoulder embankment.
Police report Billhartz was wearing his seatbelt, but was partially ejected and seriously injured. He was initially taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese by a New Baden EMS ambulance and was then airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital by ARCH Helicopter. He was last reported early Saturday morning in serious, but stable condition.
There were no other vehicles or persons involved in the crash. It occurred at 3:23 Friday afternoon.
