Semi Truck Crash Leaves Two Dead on I-64
They identify the driver as 27-year-old Alex Delgado of Key West, Florida and the passenger as 54-year-old Melvin Lewis of Opa Locka, Florida. Both were pronounced dead on the scene by Clinton County Coroner Phil Moss from multiple injuries.
State Police say initial details indicate the driver was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 at mile post 32 in the right lane when he swerved into the left lane of traffic. Delgado then overcorrected to the right, causing him to drive off the roadway striking the cncrete bridge support. The passenger was ejected from the vehicle.
The wreckage and the spilled load of wire spools from the trailer onto the highway caused the westbound lanes to be closed from 5:51 am until approximately 1:45 Wednesday afternoon.
The case remains under investigation by State Police. The coroner also planned an autopsy on Delgado's body to determine if any medical issues may have led to the crash.
