Salem and Iuka Firefighters Receive Training on Grain Elevator RescuesFiremen from the area received training over the weekend on grain elevator rescues. University of Illinois Fire Institute instructor and Salem Fire Marshall Bill Fulton says the training included the new grain tube panels that have recently been purchased for the Salem and Iuka Fire Departments.
"One of the main things that we're doing today is cutting the side of bin, draining the grain down and once we do that, they'll be a crew entry in safety harnesses and they'll put the grain tube around the victim and vacuum the grain out and put the victim in some sort of rescue device to get them out of the grain bin", said Fulton.
Fulton says the grain tube panels allow for the pressure of the grain surrounding a person trapped in an elevator to be allievated until the rescue can be completed. The training was completed at the Salem Fire Protection District training facility. Salem Firemen were joined by Centralia District, Patoka, Kell, Iuka and Sandoval Firemen in the training.
