Salem Relay for Life Kickoff Event Tuesday Night

By Bruce Kropp, WJBD News

The Salem Relay for Life holds its kickoff event Tuesday night.  Event Chair Renee Pallazolo is hoping those wanting to form teams or to volunteer will show up at the First Christian Church at six Tuesday night.

"We are doing a chili cookoff, where some teams will be bring chili and we will have the public there to judge the best chili. When you come to the door, they will give you a poker chip.  Once you've tasted the chili, you will be able to vote by putting the poker chip in next to that crockpot.  At the end, the winner will receive a basket full of relay gifts", said Pallazolo.

Pallazolo says other interested teams that aren't signed up can also bring a crockpot of Chili, a ladle, and cheese and crackers (if you would like) to join the competition.  You can call Kelly Smith at 204-95-33 to reserve a spot.  Pallazolo is hoping more teams will get involved this year.

"We're hoping to increase our teams.  We're hoping to have at least 35-teams this year.  We had 28 last year, so we are increasing it a bit, and we do want survivors to come also.  We had 107 survivors show up last year this time our goal is 150", said Pallazolo.

Pallazolo says caregivers and others who would like to volunteer are also welcome.  She reports the goal of the event in June will be announced.
