Salem Man Charged With Attempted Burglary to Jewelry StoreA 39-year-old Salem man has been formally charged in Marion County Court with attempted burglary to Wolenhaupt's Jewelry on Green Street Road east of Central City. Bond for Daniel Lepes of East Church was raised to $15,000. He was already in the Marion County Jail after being formally charged with retail theft at the Casey's General Store in Salem that had allegedly occurred just a few hours after the attempted burglary. A public defender has been appointed to represent Lepes on both charges.
Marion County Sheriff Jerry DeVore says Lepes was identified as a suspect through video camera footage. A second person was also involved who has not yet been identified. He is described as being heavy set with dark hair.
Sheriff's Deputies found the front door handle broken off along with a screen and broken glass from a window on the ground. However, no entry had been gained to the business. The video indicates the burglary attempt occurred around 10:30 Tuesday night.
