Rural Odin Man Sentenced To 5 Years In Prison For Aggravated Battery to ChildA 34-year-old rural Odin man has been sentenced to the maximum five years in prison for aggravated battery to a child.
Charles Royal of Community Beach Road had pleaded guilty to the charge in April. He admitted to injuries sustained by his five-year-old daughter last October. The State Department of Children and Family Services started the investigation after Central City School officials noticed bruises on the girl.
Assistant State's Attorney Melissa Doran called several witnesses to discuss other injuries received by the girl. They included the girl's mother and a DCFS worker who testified to photos of the girl's injuries. A counselor and therapist detailed some additional allegations that surfaced during the girl's counseling.
Royal made a statement in allocution before Judge Mark Stedelin handed down the sentence. Royal said he may have been a bad dad, but didn't inflict the injuries as claimed. Royal, who was seeking a non-reporting conditional discharge, indicated he wanted to move to Virginia.
