Rural Mt. Vernon Home Destroyed by Fire
Jefferson Rural Firemen say the fire began in the attached garage of the Dana Barnum home at 15,541 East Lynchberg Road southeast of Mt. Vernon. It was already fully engulfed when family members heard a popping noise, opened the door, and discovered the fire. All the occupants were able to get out safely.
By the time firemen arrived five minutes later, the fire had spread to an adjoining part of the house. The fire burned about half the home, with the other half receiving heavy water, heat and smoke damage. Firemen were able to save some of the family's personal items. There was one vehicle in the garage that was destroyed.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. Mt. Vernon and Bluford Firemen provided mutual aide assistance on the scene, while Woodlawn Firemen manned the Jefferson Rural Station in Mt. Vernon in the event of another fire.
Firemen received the call at 12:49 Wednesday morning. They had the fire under control about an hour later and remained on the scene until 4:41 am.
