Prison Official Believed Beaten By Robinson Prison Escapee

A prison officer searching for a fugitive inmate in eastern Illinois was beaten by a man believed to be the prisoner who walked away from a work crew earlier in the day.

The Illinois Department of Corrections says the man surprised the officer, struck him from behind and fled. The officer was bruised. Meanwhile, the Clinton County Sheriff's Department reports that Jared Carter has been known to frequent the Carlyle, Keyesport, Highland and Bond County area in the past.

Carter walked away around 11 a.m. Friday from a crew that was cutting grass on the grounds of the Robinson Correctional Center. The crew was supervised and working outside the walls of the minimum security prison.  Carter was serving time on burglary convictions.

Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer says law enforcement personnel were continuing the search Saturday on foot, by air and with dogs.  Anyone seeing a person matching Carter's description is asked to contact their nearest law enforcement agency.
