Newly Appointed SIU Board Member to Be ChairmanCARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - One of two newly appointed members of the Southern Illinois University system's governing board is the panel's new chairman.
WSIU Radio reports that Randal Thomas, the former head of the state's National Guard, was unanimously elected Thursday. It was the trustees' first meeting since he and former SIU-Edwardsville history professor Shirley Portwood were selected last week by Gov. Pat Quinn.
Those nominees by the Democratic governor came with the endorsement of the state's senate members, who had spiked three of Quinn's previous candidates. That board on Thursday was also to take up a new tuition and fee schedule for the next school year, as well as a tentative budget and various construction projects.
