Mt. Vernon Woman Admits to Receiving Social Security Payments Meant for Her Deceased Mother

A 51-year-old Mt. Vernon woman has pleaded guilty to federal charges of theft of government funds.  

Mary Barnett-Johnson admitted to fradulently continuing to receive and use her deceased mother's social security benefits knowing that she was not entitled to receive or use those funds for her own personal benefit.  She received $85,353 in benefits from August of 2003 through September of 2011 that were intended for her mother who died in 2003.  

Barnett-Johnson will face up to ten years imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000 when sentenced on May 30th in U.S. District Court at Benton.  

The investigation was conducted by the Social Security Administration's Office of Inspector General and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ranley R. Killian.
