Mt. Vernon Man Dies in Tuesday Morning Wreck

By Bruce Kropp, WJBD News

A 30-year-old Mt. Vernon man has died as a result of a fiery single car accident early Tuesday morning.

Jefferson County Sheriff Roger Mulch says Shawn Willard was pronounced dead at the scene.  The wreck occurred on Illinois Highway 148 north of I-57 southwest of Mt. Vernon.  His car was found overturned and fully engulfed in flames.  There was a deer located at the scene which was possibly a contributing factor.

Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks says Willard was going to work at General Tire when the wreck occurred.  He believes Willard may have been unconscious or had died from injuries sustained in the accident before fire consumed the car.  There were no passengers.

The wreck occurred at 5:49 Tuesday morning.   The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is continuing its investigation.
