March on Washington Events Held Statewide

CHICAGO (AP) - Commemorations for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington are taking place in Illinois.

In Chicago several churches plan to hold special services dedicated to it.  The Rev. Michael Pfleger of Saint Sabina Church on the city's South Side will host an event celebrating with music and art, followed by a sermon.

Those who were at the event are also sharing their memories.  Seventy-five-year-old Eugene Redmond is a poet and professor from Fairview Heights. He tells the Belleville News-Democrat it was the single most important event in his generation.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson was in Washington Saturday. He was one of several speakers at the "Realize the Dream" event.

The King Center has organized a ceremony on Wednesday, which is the actual anniversary. President Barack Obama will speak.
