Local Man Takes 3rd in Modified Class at Marion County Fair ITPA Tractor Pull with Custom TractorThe Illinois Tractor Pulling Association put on a tractor pull at the Marion County Fair on Monday that featured Tractors from five classes ranging from the 1050 Super Stock Class to the big 10,000 Pro Stock Class.
Competing in the 5800 Modified Class was Russel Vandevere, a Kinmundy man and Secretary of the Marion County Fair, pulling in his custom built tractor, "The Russler". The Russler is unique among its class, partially because of a large, Vietnam era Lycoming T-53 helicopter engine that powers the tractor.
"It's a turbine powered engine out of a Vietnam Era Helicopter. I just built it within the last six months." Vandevere said.
Vandevere acquired the hard-to-find engine through an acquaintance. He's competed in 20 Tractor Pulls already this year, most in the last 6 weeks. He's currently in 3rd place in the entire state in the 5800 Modified Class. He took third place during Tuesday's event in his class with a score of three two zero point oh eight, right behind Jacob Ohl of Danville, Illinois, who placed first, and John Young of Bismarck, Illinois, who placed second.
