Iuka Grade School District Conducting Safety and Security Survey

By Will Doolin, WJBD News

In the wake of the deadly Connecticut school shooting last month, the Iuka Grade School is currently conducting a safety and security survey throughout the school.

Superintendent John Consolino reported to the Board Monday night that the survey is intended to determine what upgrades may be needed in the building to increase safety for students and staff.  He reports staff members are currently being surveyed and plans to survey the community within the next few weeks.  He says he wants to address any concerns parents and the community may have for the school.

Superintendent Consolino updated the board on the list of candidates for the April elections.  The School Board has four people running for the four open seats.  Incumbents Terri Conklin and Patricia Timm are running as is Ely Lambert and Shawn Harper.  Frank Thompson and Robyn Burroughs are not seeking re-election.

In Board action, the Board accepted with regrets the resignation of Jr. High Teacher, baseball and track coach Scott Shanafelt.  The district is currently advertising for a Jr. High Math Teacher to substitute for the remainder of the school year.  Anyone interested in applying for the position needs to contact the district office at 618-323-6233.
