Illinois GOP Leader Announces Welfare Reform Plan
WJBC radio reports Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross announced the plan Tuesday in Normal. He was joined by Republican state Reps. Dan Brady, Adam Brown, Pam Roth and Barb Wheeler. They say the package could save the state millions of dollars.
The plan would add photos to Illinois Link cards to stop fraud. Another part would prevent Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits from being used for alcohol, lottery tickets or firearms. And a third part would prevent those in jail from receiving public aid.
Cross says supporters of the plan want to make sure welfare in Illinois "is viable and can sustain itself" but that it isn't abused.
