Investigation Shows Problems With 25% Of Cases Handled by DHS Inspector General

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A special investigator has found problems with more than a quarter of the death-related cases investigated by the Inspector General of the Illinois Department of Human Services.

Gov. Pat Quinn appointed special investigator Michael McCotter in July after a Belleville News-Democrat investigation. The investigation revealed that, since 2003, the department's inspector general didn't investigate 53 cases about disabled adults living at home who were allegedly abused or neglected and later died. McCotter's team looked into 72 cases and found about 28 percent of the cases had errors or omissions.

Former DHS inspector general William Davis has resigned. Quinn previously issued an executive order increasing state oversight of investigations into the deaths of adults with disabilities. The governor says his office will review the findings and try to find a solution.
