Hay Bale Fire in Rural Texico Thursday

By Bruce Kropp, WJBD News

Jefferson County Rural Firemen were called out twice Thursday afternoon and evening to fight a fire in 95 bales of hay on the John Howard farm at 16,545 East Devide Road in  rural Texico.  The fire apparently started from a tractor backfire.   Howard was able to pull three rows of hay away from a barn which assisted firemen in keeping the fire away from the building.  The hay bales were allowed to burn themselves out.  Estimated damage is placed at $4,500.  Firemen were first called out at two Thursday afternoon.  They remained on the scene for three hours and then were called back again at 5:30 and remained on the scene for an additional hour.
