Gay Marriage Supporters in Illinois House Rally SenateSPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Gay marriage supporters in the Illinois House are in Springfield rallying their Senate colleagues to approve a same-sex marriage bill. State Rep. Kelly Cassidy told a crowd that it's time to pass the measure while the issue has momentum.
The Chicago Democrat was joined at the rally by other House lawmakers and gay TV actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Ferguson stars on the Emmy-winning show "Modern Family." He says Illinois "has a chance to be on the right side of history today."
A Senate committee is expected to consider a measure Thursday afternoon that would remove a state prohibition on marriage between two people of the same gender. Opponents, including Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, have said same-sex marriage is against the "natural order."
