Five People Injured in Jefferson County Wreck
Five people were injured in a Jefferson County wreck this weekend. Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies say 70-year-old Gary Melton of Mt. Vernon crossed the center line of Route 37 near the Campground Road in the Bonnie area early Saturday night and struck an on-coming car nearly head on. The driver of that car is identified as 47-year-old Amelia Smith of Desoto. Both drivers along with three passengers in the Smith car were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. They are 36-year-old Gretchen Chamber of Carbondale and 68-year-old Susan Stanhouse and 62-year-old Gary Adler of Marion. Reports do not indicate why Melton may have crossed the center line. Jefferson Rural Firemen say one of those involved in the wreck required minor extrication. No tickets have been issued as the investigation continues. The wreck occurred at 7:20 Saturday night.
