An earthmover begins demolition of the building on Monday.
By the end of the first day of demolition, only the front portion of the building along East Main Street remains.
All that remains at the end of the second day of demolition is a pile of debris.
Downtown Salem Building Comes Down
A former downtown Salem hotel that was last a pizza restaurant and apartment building is now a pile of rubble.
Foster Salvage of Salem took down the two story structure at East Main and Jefferson on Monday and Tuesday. It had been vacant for sometime and Foster elected to tear it down rather than bring it into compliance with city building codes. Once the remains of the building are removed, the lot will be turned into a parking lot for the downtown area.
The City of Salem has already agreed to purchase the cleared lot for $17,000. The money for the purchase will come from the downtown tax increment financing district.
