Centralia Announces 2014 Leaf Burning Weekends

By Rob Sussman, WJBD News

The City of Centralia has announced a slew of leaf and landscape waste burning weekends for 2014. The next approved burn weekend will be on Saturday and Sunday, March 1st and 2nd from 12:00 noon until 6:00 pm.

It is legal to burn landscape waste only within the city limits. Landscape waste is defined as being dry leaves, tree trimmings, tree limbs, branches, and vines. Landscape waste does not include grass clippings, green trimmings, or wet branches or leaves.

All fires must be attended by a responsible adult. Open burning may be halted by city officials if it is deemed to be unsafe or too close to nearby structures. Residents are reminded to utilize leaf-collection services to their fullest extent before burning, as some residents are adversely affected by smoke inhalation.

Recreational fires are allowed for cooking and entertainment, but require a permit from the City Fire Department. The permit costs $5.00 and must be applied for in writing.
