Cahokia District Looks to Close 2 Schools To Save Sports And Other Programs

CAHOKIA, Ill. (AP) - Administrators of the school district in southwestern Illinois' Cahokia plan to close two schools in an effort to spare sports, music, art and physical education programs, along with some teaching jobs.

But the plan unanimously agreed upon by the district's board this week is contingent on the school system getting the same amount of state money as this year.  The board is looking to close an early childhood center and the freshman academy. The freshmen will be merged in with students at the regular high school.

The move comes as the district tries to make up for about $1.5 million in losses due to declining average attendance, a loss of revenue from property taxes and raises in multi-year union contracts.
