Business Park Being Planned Near MidAmerica Airport at MascoutahMASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) - Southwestern Illinois' St. Clair County will have more than 250 acres of its land near a struggling airport appraised as a step toward selling the property to developers planning a business park.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports the county's Public Building Commission overseeing MidAmerica St. Louis Airport agreed Thursday to hire a company to affix a value to the 253 acres.
Airport director Tim Cantwell didn't address the long-term plans of the appraised property. But the newspaper reports that Covenant Aerospace Inc. looks to build a business park centered around the construction of cargo airplanes near the Mascoutah airport.
The company estimates the venture could create nearly 2,200 jobs.
MidAmerica hasn't turned a profit since opening in 1998 as an alternative to St. Louis' Lambert International Airport.
