Bonnie Man Wakes Up Choking, But Escapes Burning Home Without Injury

By Bruce Kropp

A Bonnie man was able to escape his burning home Thursday night through a back window near where he was sleeping.

Jefferson Rural Firemen say James Bayer of 365 West Helkin woke up when he couldn't breath because of the smoke. He was able to get out the nearby window before suffering any injuries. Firemen report the two story home was fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival. The home will be a total loss.

While the fire appears to have started in the living room at the front of the home, the exact cause is still under investigation. Mt. Vernon Firemen provided mutual aide assistance.

The fire call came in at 7:54 Thursday night. Firemen remained on the scene until 11:44 Thursday evening.
