Accident Creates Traffic Nightmare On I-57 South of Mt. Vernon
State Police say the driver of the truck, 67-year-old Carolyn Smith of Chester, lost control when the trailer lost a wheel, ran off the shoulder, and overturned. Smith was not hurt.
Traffic was forced to use only the shoulder of the highway for about two hours until the wreckage could be removed. The traffic backup stretched several miles at one point. The incident occurred around 1:30 Sunday afternoon at mile market 88 seven miles south of Mt. Vernon.
