Report: Eating Two Large Meals Per Day May Help Diabetics

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- A new study suggests that eating fewer but larger meals per day may help people with type-2 diabetes.

Research from the Czech Republic suggests that by eating two large meals per day rather than six smaller ones, type-2 diabetics may have more success in controlling their blood sugar.

But ABC News' Chief Health and Medical Editor Doctor Richard Besser says diabetics don't need to immediately change their eating habits.

"There have been a number of studies looking at this, and they've had conflicting results. The other thing is, here they were having breakfast and lunch, and for us culturally, most people dinner is the time when we all get together," he said. "But it does say work with your doctor on what kind of food does best for you with controlling your diabetes."

Dr. Besser says the best way to fight diabetes is to lower your chances of ever getting it in the first place.

"The biggest risk factor is being overweight or obese, but it doesn't take a big weight loss to change that around," he said. "If you can lose five percent of your body weight--  so if you weigh 200 pounds, that's only ten pounds-- it cuts your risk of diabetes by more than half."
