Avoid Teen Feelings of Angst in Adult Relationships

CREATISTA/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Almost every teen goes through it: that period in life when you can't stand being around your parents. Often, these feelings pass although sometimes the animosities can linger well beyond adolescence.

Generally, people who had better relationships with their parents reported a higher quality of their own romantic involvements as adults.

University of Alberta relationship researcher Matt Johnson made his findings after observing nearly 3,000 people at three stages of life from ages 12 to 32.

Johnson's advice for people is not to allow their personal love lives to be influenced by what might have been some stormy years with mom and dad.

Yet, if things go south with your love life, Johnson cautions that it's not necessarily the fault of your folks, adding, "It is important to recognize everyone has a role to play in creating a healthy relationship, and each person needs to take responsibility for their contribution to that dynamic."
