Sanya Richards Ross Goes from Track Star to Reality Star
(NEW YORK) -- Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards Ross has left the track to star in a new WeTV reality show, Glam & Gold.
The track and field athlete, who took home two gold medals from the 2012 London Games, recently told ABC News Radio that she's been wanting to nab a reality show since 2008, but finally convinced her husband, NFL player Aaron Ross, who sealed the deal.
"We were a little bit fearful of opening ourselves up, and you have seen marriages fall apart on camera," Richards Ross admits. "But one of the things I noticed, family shows they really do stay together. I think when you film with your family because you love each other, there's lines that people don't cross and everyone wants to see the other person do well."
Richards Ross' entire family is featured on Glam & Gold as part of what she likes to call, Team SRR. Her team consists of her father and coach, Archie Richards; her mother and agent, Sharon; her sister and business partner, Shari; and her cousin and publicist, Yolande.
"You really get to see my life off the track," the 28-year-old adds. "Most of what I do usually is behind-the-scenes, and I'm on the track for 50 seconds, then a two-minute interview and then we're kind of out of everyone's consciousness."
Richards Ross says track fans will also see her family struggles, like when her husband got released from the Jacksonville Jaguars, only to be picked up by the New York Giants. Or the "strange relationship" with her mother-in-law, Cheryl. They'll even see how the Nike spokeswoman deals with a toe surgery that has stalled her return to the track.
"I had the procedure for my right big toe right after the Olympic games. And we had hoped -- the doctors and I -- it would be a potentially two-month recovery period. But, man, everyone heals differently," Richards Ross explains to ABC News Radio. "My doctor has me resting because the toe hasn't quite healed up like we wanted it to. But the Olympics are three years away and I know for sure I'll be ready by then."
Still, fans and newcomers alike will fall in love with Richards Ross' drive, one that has racked up four Olympic gold medals, endorsement deals with companies such as BMW and Nike, and even a hair salon with her sister; all of this while dealing with an illness that occasionally leaves her with "lesions and mouth ulcers," according to ESPN.
"My team says I have a gold medal standard on and off the track," Richards Ross adds.
WeTV's Glam & Gold premieres Thursday, July 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
