Demi Lovato Talks Bullying, Inspiration in New Book

Heidi Gutman/ABC News(NEW YORK) -- Demi Lovato has been honest about her struggles with addiction, depression, eating disorders and bullying. She writes about all of them in her new book, Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year, in stores Tuesday.  The 21-year-old singer said Monday on ABC's Good Morning America that her fans inspired her to detail how she stays on the road to recovery.

"A lot of times my fans ask me, 'You know, you helped me get into recovery' or 'because of you I went to treatment' or 'you saved my life,'" Demi revealed. "But the question that a lot of people have for me is: 'how do you continue to stay strong?' And over the past few years I’ve done this thing, a morning meditation, basically, where I read out of a book and it’s a quote, a passage, and then a goal for the day, so basically what I wanted to do was do that for my fans."

Demi said the inspirational sayings range from from Albert Einstein and Aristotle to Tupac Shakur and Nicki Minaj.

In Staying Strong, Demi’s also vocal about the topic of bullying.  Though she's been bullied herself, she defends bullies in the book, saying they need a hug too.  "There was a time where I really resented the people that bullied me in my life, and I lived with so much hate that I only ended up making myself sick,” Demi explained.

Demi also told Good Morning America that her trip to Kenya for her 21st birthday changed her life and cemented her recovery. "When I went to Kenya, my life completely changed because  the high that I got from just helping people...was better than any drug that I've ever done," Demi admitted.
