"Bridesmaids" Writers Team Up for New Script
(NEW YORK) -- Bridesmaids fans hoping for a sequel will have to settle for the next best thing: The film’s screenwriters, Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, are teaming up for what could be another blockbuster movie.
According to The New York Times, the pair will write, produce and star in another comedy, with Wiig, the SNL veteran, making her directorial debut.
The plot is described as “best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with.”
“We’re very excited to be writing,” the two women said in a statement to the Times. “We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”
Added Wiig, “I’ve been wanting to direct for some time now. This seems like the perfect first project.”
The still-untitled film follows Wiig-Mumolo’s highly successful Bridesmaids, the 2011 hit that earned them an Oscar nomination for their very first movie script, took in close to $288 million at the box office and launched a string of female-driven comedies such as The Heat and Pitch Perfect.
Though Wiig quickly made it clear that she wasn’t interested in writing a Bridesmaids sequel, she and Mumolo waited to write another screenplay.
“We wanted it to be the right time and the right idea, and both of those elements have come together,” they told the Times in an email.
