Illinois lawmakers have approved the state's first limits on the size of political contributions, but not everyone is happy with it.
Republican State Sentaor John O. Jones says it puts more power into the hands of those who already have too much - House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. "The Speaker can give me 125-thousand dollars and Senator Leuchtefeld 125-thousand dollars and then tell us to give 'Billy Joe' 50-thousand dollars because the limit's 50-thousand," he says.
Jones says the limits only affect primary elections, not the general elections. The measure passed 36-22 Friday. It now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn.
Government watchdog groups also said they were dissatisfied. But they agreed to support the measure after concluding they could not pass a stronger bill. During some talks for the reforms, Jones says Republicans weren't allowed even at the request of watchdog groups.
