Centralia High School juniors will be rewarded for doing well on the Prairie State Achievement Exam. The school board has approved a package of incentives that includes a fun day, personal days and exam exemptions. If 51% or more of the entire junior class meets or exceeds state standards in reading and 54% or more meet or exceed standards in math on the Prairie State exam, the entire senior class will be rewarded a 'Fun Day' outside of school their senior year. The plan would be to rent the Recreation Center, Good Times Family Fun Center, or something comparable in addition to the senior picnic the following day.
In addition students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading or math will receive one personal day or two days if they exceed standards in both areas. A senior may receive one waiver, good for one exam exemption, for each portion of the Prairie State exam that they meet or exceed state standards. A student meeting or exceeding standards in all four areas will be able to wave seven exams during the senior year.
Students will have to be passing the course in order to be exempt. The administration will keep the right to make any student take semester exams regardless of the policy. Low scores on the Prairie State exam have resulted in Centralia High School not making adequate yearly progress.
